12 According to Pryor this was a galley of rather mysterious characteristics, found in Latin sources in the first part of the twelfth century and deriving its name from the Arabic ‘qit‘a’ – a large type of warship. It was evidently larger than the conventional galea of the same period. FC says that cats might also be called triremes (p. 804), as later does AA (11. 27). See Pryor, ‘From dromon to galea’, p. 109.

14 Probably Galicia, province in north-west Spain. Fleets from the North Sea and England were accustomed to put in at La Coruña to visit Santiago de Compostela, and to take on water.
